2016 Presidential Elections: Social Media Predicts Wrong

No one predicted the results of the 2016 Presidential Elections. Especially not social media and in that matter no other medium predicted the victory of President Trump. People like myself created a filter bubble so big that we were astonished with the results and in sense completely destroyed. It was interesting to see the different types of groups that played a role throughout the campaign but also after the results. We had both parties, that though they did not agree with some of their candidate's policies still voted for them due to the loyalty or obligation they possessed to their political affiliation. Their group cohesion was strong and effective for the Republican party. What surprised me the most overall was the filter bubble we all created (well most of us). The news told us that Hillary would win by a landslide and social media also made it seem like the election wasn't even an election with the obvious win of Hillary. The results woke many people up and it started an even bigger rampage than we all expected. I literally felt mentally exhausted from all the political talk on Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and etc. My filter bubble was filled with Hillary supporter or anti-Trump supporters, creating an overall negative experience on my social media use of November 9th, 2016. We live in an era where social media has taken over our lives but could this bring future negative consequences like it did for many on election night? I would say so. If people don't educate themselves with reliable sources this will only be the beginning of a domino effect.
